reading is good

Today is Intl. Literacy Day.  I thought it was the perfect holiday to celebrate on this rainy day.  I'm currently reading Unbroken.  Zack just finished it and really liked it.  The last book I read was a year ago or so (I know, that's sad).  So, its time to start another one.  I have to finish books I start so I am excited that this one is highly recommended.  Here are a few other reading related items:

*  I still have dreams of conquering this list of the classics.  Sadly, since I posted it months ago, I haven't read any others.  I am sure that will be different by the time my 30th birthday rolls around as reading is on my list. 

*  This Fall, I'll be reading more as I am a member of this book club.  
*  To help you choose what to read next go to "what should I read next?". 
*  Next on my list is Winds of War unless I can find My Life in France at the library.

//  I am so looking forward to relishing in every moment of Autumn this year.  It seems that its barely September and I am already in full Autumn swing.  Oh, its going to be a good season!

Read & Viewed

I really love reading.  Why don't I do it more?  Time, priorities, distractions, technology, unfortunately the list could go on.  I wonder if I should get a Kindle or iPad and then I'd read more.  But really just holding a book in my hands, turning the pages, carting around my little treasure of words in my purse, placing a finished book on my bookshelf... that is more my style.  I love the "old" days of books, writing, paper, ink.  I want more of that in my life.

Having said that, I wanted to share a book I read that shook my heart more than anything else lately.  Sarah's Key.  Its a WWII historical fiction story based on a true event surrounding the Holocaust.  This weekend we finally saw the movie version.  (I had been waiting for the movie!  And sorry friends, no movie viewing party this time.)  We got a free copy of the book, which I was stoked about since I had checked mine out from the library.  The movie was really well done.  I fought back actual sobs a few times during the movie.  I just could only imagine.  There was one part where a mother is being separated from her daughter that just got me the most.  Its one of those stories that has me reflecting on my life since.  When that happens, I think that means its a good story.  No?

//  Here's to reading more.  And definitely, here's to reading books more before I see the movie.  That's a much better way, in my opinion.  (This story I was especially glad to have read it first.)

US of A

On this Earth Day I wanted to share something that is making me more aware and excited about being better to our earth, this land, that I live on.

I checked out this book, United States of Americana from the library and I am surprised at how much I am enjoying it.  I intended on just skimming some of the chapters but I am reading every word of every chapter.  It talks a lot about how people are "going back to the land" in their daily living these days, despite whether or not they live on "land".  This is the perfect help/inspiration book for me as I am trying to live a simple life, sort of the life I might live if I lived in the country.  Simply said, I'm  trying to live in this large, very much NOT THE COUNTRY, city of New York.

*  I want so much to have a garden!
